Kristen (she/her/hers) is an experienced clinician with specialized training in multiple areas, including postpartum depression and other perinatal mental illnesses, sexual abuse and trauma recovery, and sexual and gender expression and orientation*. She works to normalize the therapeutic experience and provide a safe and accepting space for all of her clients. She practices from a humanistic orientation, with unconditional positive regard for all of her clients. Kristen has experience working with adolescents (15+) struggling with gender-related issues and adults of all ages and struggles. Kristen has also been trained and is working toward certification in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).
Kristen has led a women’s therapy group since 2013 and has a passion for group work. Kristen co-facilitated a volunteer women’s group at a halfway house as part of an initiative sponsored by Mental Health America of Houston (MHA). For years, Kristen also volunteered with MHA training medical professionals to screen, diagnose and treat perinatal mental health disorders, such as postpartum depression and anxiety. More recently, Kristen has volunteered with Gender Infinity (an organization supporting the international transgender community) on their conference planning committee.
Prior to changing careers and joining Houston Psychotherapists, Inc., in April of 2009, Kristen spent 12 years working in the financial industry gaining valuable life experience that she feels has helped enrich her clinical skills. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago and her masters degree in clinical psychology from the University of Houston-Clear Lake. She is licensed by the state of Texas as a Professional Counselor and is a member of the American Counseling Association, the Society for Sexual, Affectional, Intersex, and Gender Expansive Identities (SAIGE) and the Houston Group Psychotherapy Society.
