Gender expression and sexuality*

People of all ages can struggle with issues related to gender identity and affectional/sexual orientation.

Gender identity is the personal sense of one’s own gender. Gender identity can correlate with a person’s assigned sex at birth or can differ from it. Gender expression typically reflects a person’s gender identity, but this is not always the case. While a person may express behaviors, attitudes, and appearances consistent with a particular gender role, such expression may not necessarily reflect their gender identity. The term gender identity was originally coined by Robert J. Stoller in 1964.

Sexual orientation is an enduring pattern of romantic or sexual attraction toward other people, whether of the opposite sex or gender, the same sex or gender, to both sexes or to others regardless of gender. Common categories of attractions are heterosexuality, homosexuality, bisexuality, pansexuality and asexuality. Whether you’re confident and comfortable with your sexuality, or are still exploring what your sexual orientation may be, it can be difficult to share related struggles with others.

For both gender identity/expression and sexual preference, societal, familial and internal pressures may create stress and an unwillingness to live as your authentic self. At Houston Psychotherapists, we have specially trained clinicians who create a safe space for you to explore topics related to your gender and sexuality.
